Countdown to ATP: 8 days

Family Underground
Listen to: 'Axial' on Axial
Druids of the Danish drone forests, Family Underground put their spell on me ever since I heard their Heavy Tapes release, Risen under Altar Souls, for the first time. Dense drone carpets not suited for the faint hearted, or the short attention spanned, for that matter. I'm very curious to see them live but they'll be clashing with whatever extremely badass other band.

Fursaxa
Listen to: 'Purple Fantasy' on Lepidoptera
Oh yeah, Lepidoptera is great. I totally dig that mantra shit as much as the new Clipse record but Fursaxa has more tricks up her medieval sleeves than just the mantra shtick. The droning for instance is beyond trance-like, mesmerizing to the last drop. I need to check out more of her music though, Lepidoptera is the only album I've heard by her so recommend away!

White Out w/ Nels Cline
Fuck Wilco. Nels Cline has been rolling solo for a long while now and his guitar excercitions make a bigger impression on me than his messing with Tweedy and boys. I don't know abouyt White Out though and when I need to make tough, tough choices I'm not gonna spend my time wondering if they're any good.

Peter Brötzmann and Han Bennink
I first saw Bennink play some three years ago, with The Ex, jamming like he just turned sixteen. The man is 64 now and still ruling the drums on the avant terrain. Here's what Chris Corsano said about him when I interviewed him: "Bennink's great. The first thing I heard him on was Porto Novo with Marion Brown. The drums sounded so fucked up on that record. Maybe it was just the recording, but there's this distorted quality to them that I love [...]". What I remember about seeing him is his no holds barred attitude, he still plays like he just got his first set of sticks. As for Brötzmann, I've never heard him play but I know I want to. Recommend one album I have to listen to before seeing him live.

the peter brötzmann chicago tentet is a very good way to discover the german master. however, i still think ken vandermark kicks his ass live. saw him a couple of times, one with the tentet (with vandermark as well) and one time with as a trio with vandermark, brötzmann and mats gustafsson. extremely powerful, three un-amplified saxophones in the kunstencentrum belgië.
